Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010 Technical Preview in 2009

Tags: Office System, vNext, SharePoint 2010

It’s been almost six months since my post predicting every name including SharePoint 2010. Could we be seeing the picture below in 6 more?

SharePoint2010

According to the Exchange 2010 Announcement on MSDN PressPass, we should expect a Technical Preview Release of SharePoint 2010 in the Third Quarter of 2009 along with the other Office 2010 products. Release to Manufacturing is officially first half of 2010.

Google News shows lots of press coverage of SharePoint 2010, so don’t take my word for it!

What do you think of the news? Excited, disappointed? Let me know in the comments below or through my contact form.

Update 4/15 10AM Central: Attribution to the original image of Office 2010 Technical Preview goes to Zack Whittaker. I modified his image in Paint.Net to superimpose SharePoint over Office.

I'm interested to see the new features in 2010... Looking back, it was a pretty big jump from 2003 to 2007. So maybe this might be the same? Hopefully, migration from 2007 to 2010 would be a whole lot better than it was with 2003 to 2007.

Hi Ali, It was a huge jump from 2003 to 2007. We won't know for sure until 2010 is out, but I'm not expecting the same kind of "revolutionary" change. There will be a lot of improvements for sure, but hopefully, upgrade will not be as painful. -Tom

Migration from Sharepoint 2003 is pretty easy compared to 2001 hopefully MS will improve the Sharepoint UI, it's still offputting lots of people

The information on the new functionality features in SharePoint 2010 is yet too scarce to make grounded judgments, but it has to be something major. The branding is going to lead to further confusion, that is for sure... The transition will take time to settle, too.

Decatec, interesting perspective on migration. As long as you aren't trying to migrate user metadata across forests or customizations, you have some options for 2003 to 2007. What UI changes are you looking for? Dreamer - branding changes are always hard. -Tom
